Music, Arts, and Wine Festivals at Fireman's Field
Annual events connecting Purcellville to Loudoun wine country tourism and generating downtown commercial activity.
Two of Purcellville's signature annual events — the Purcellville Music and Arts Festival and the Wine and Food Festival — were held at Fireman's Field throughout Kwasi Fraser's eight-year tenure as mayor. Both events contributed to Purcellville's identity as a destination community in western Loudoun County and to the commercial vitality of the town's downtown district.
Purcellville Music and Arts Festival
The Purcellville Music and Arts Festival is an annual outdoor festival held at Fireman's Field, featuring local and regional musicians, artists, and cultural performers. The festival reflects the character of western Loudoun County's arts community — a mix of traditional American folk, bluegrass, and country music alongside visual arts, craft vendors, and community activities.
For a town of approximately 9,000 residents, a well-attended annual music and arts festival creates economic activity across multiple business categories: restaurants experience increased foot traffic before and after the event; parking, transportation, and hospitality businesses benefit from visitors who come from outside the town; and artisan vendors and musicians generate income from the festival marketplace. The festival's use of Fireman's Field — activated through a January 2018 concession partnership with Shaun Alexander Enterprises and Play To Win, LLC — demonstrates the multi-use value of the public athletic complex.
Wine and Food Festival
The Wine and Food Festival at Fireman's Field connected Purcellville directly to one of Loudoun County's most economically significant industries. Loudoun County is part of Virginia's wine country — a cluster of more than 40 wineries within the county's boundaries, many of them within 15 miles of Purcellville. Virginia's wine industry attracts visitors from Washington, D.C., Maryland, and across the mid-Atlantic region.
The Wine and Food Festival positioned Purcellville as a hub within this wine-tourism ecosystem. Rather than requiring visitors to travel individually to multiple rural winery locations, the festival brought wine producers and food vendors to a central Purcellville venue, generating foot traffic in the downtown commercial district and creating positive brand associations between Purcellville and the Loudoun wine country experience. For local businesses — restaurants, shops, accommodations, and food producers — the festival represented a concentrated opportunity to reach the demographic that Loudoun wine country tourism attracts.
The Annual Tree-Lighting Ceremony
Beyond the summer and fall festivals, Fraser personally participated in Purcellville's annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony each December — a consistent community tradition that marked the beginning of the winter holiday season. Fraser's participation each year reflected the same community-engagement orientation that characterized his management of other town assets and events — showing up as a visible, consistent presence in the civic life of the town he served.
